Poll Results: Who is elevating political discourse? Newsom leads.
Amplify America asked 10,000 Americans: "Of these Democratic leaders, who is doing the most to elevate political discourse and help move the country away from hate and discord?"
In our March 2026 SMS poll of 10,000 Americans, respondents were asked:
“Of these Democratic leaders, who is doing the most to elevate political discourse and help move the country away from hate and discord?”
The results reveal a clear frontrunner in California Governor Gavin Newsom, who captured 31.2% of the vote. This positions him ahead of other prominent figures, suggesting a public perception of his efforts in fostering unity and constructive dialogue.
Texas State Representative James Talarico followed closely with 27.0%, indicating strong support for his approach to bridging divides, particularly through his advocacy on education and social issues.
New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) garnered 21.3%, reflecting her vocal role in progressive movements that emphasize empathy and reform, though her polarizing style may have limited broader appeal.
Vice President Kamala Harris received 15.6%, a respectable share that aligns with her national profile but perhaps underscores challenges in standing out on discourse-specific matters.
Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman rounded out the results with 5.0%, possibly due to his more recent focus on recovery and policy rather than overt unity-building.
These findings come at a pivotal moment in 2026, as the nation grapples with deepening partisan rifts. Newsom’s lead could stem from his high-visibility initiatives, such as cross-aisle collaborations on climate and economic recovery, which resonate with voters seeking de-escalation. However, the relatively even split among the top contenders highlights a fragmented Democratic field, where no single leader dominates the narrative on healing divisions.
